Discover traveller’s best choice. This is one of the most visited sites in Belize. Discover the Hol Chan & Shark Ray Alley underwater world. In this site you will get to swim with friendly rays and sharks. Also enjoy sea turtles in their natural habitat. Discover many species of coral and marine animals. This snorkel tour is number one on TripAdvisor!! Hol Chan Marine Reserve was the first marine reserve established in Belize in 1987. Fishermen would clean their catch a mile away from Hol Chan and throw the remains in the water, which attracted many bottom feeders like the nurse shark and many species of sting rays. This became a major place of attraction for a few years until it was made into Hol Chan Marine Reserve.
Hol Chan Marine reserve is divided into 4 Major Zones; Zone A, B, C and D with Zone A and D to be the most active zones. Zone A is Hol Chan which is Mayan word that roughly translates to small cut in the reef or break in the reef. Zone D is Shark Ray Alley where the friendly sharks and sting rays live. The other zones play an important role in the Marine park as well, since they are the nursery to all the juvenile fish. Zone B, the Sea Grass beds, being home of thousands of Queen Conch larva and juvenile fish making their way to the Barrier Reef. Zone C is the Mangrove Island, this plays and important role for juvenile marine life in their larvae cycle, as it provides microscopic algae deposits to feed the larvae to reach maturity level. So the Hol Chan Marine Reserve is responsible for nursing fish from juvenile level to full maturity.
